Math tutoring that begins with getting to know your student

Every student learns math differently, so I take the time to understand how your child thinks, where they feel stuck, and what helps them feel confident enough to ask questions and try again.

Meet your tutor

Hi, I’m Mrs. Channell

I am a credentialed teacher with over 28 years of experience, and have taught grade levels from Kindergarten through 12th grade. It was when I moved to teaching at the middle school and high school levels early in my career that I developed a love for teaching math, and I desired for students to have a strong understanding of mathematical concepts. I eventually went back to school to obtain my Masters in Math Education.

When my daughter reached school age, I became a homeschool mom and worked part-time at the same school where my daughter attended. Now she is nearly finished with high school, and it has been such a joy to be a part of her educational journey through it all.

At the end of the 2025-26 school year, I felt called out of teaching in the public sector to pursue other interests including private tutoring and other business opportunities.

Our approach

Building relationships and personalized learning

There is no single path to understanding math. Some students need to slow down and strengthen foundational skills. Others understand the concepts but need help organizing their work or explaining their thinking. Some students simply need a supportive place to ask the questions they are hesitant to ask in class.

My approach begins with listening.

1

Get to know the student

Before focusing on what needs to be fixed, I look at what is already working. I learn about your student’s experience with math, their strengths, challenges, goals, and interests, along with what they are learning at school and what their teacher expects. This gives us a clearer picture of how to personalize their support.

2

Identify what’s getting in the way

A student who is struggling with algebra may actually have gaps in earlier skills. A student who says, “I’m just not good at math,” may understand more than they realize but lack confidence. I look beyond the immediate problem to identify the skills and understanding underneath it.

3

Create a personalized learning plan

Together, we decide what to focus on and how to move forward. The plan can change as the student changes, because learning is not static and tutoring shouldn’t be either.

Tutoring is personalized around each student’s:

  • Current math skills and areas of need
  • Learning style and pace
  • School curriculum and upcoming assignments
  • Goals, interests, and confidence level
  • Strengths and areas where they need additional support

4

Build understanding and confidence

The goal is for students to become independent learners rather than depend on a tutor forever. We work as a team so they can explain their thinking, recognize patterns, learn from mistakes, and approach unfamiliar problems with greater confidence, which leads to progress that lasts beyond the tutoring session.

Sessions may include

  • Strengthening foundational math skills
  • Supporting current classroom material
  • Homework guidance
  • Test and quiz preparation
  • Building problem-solving strategies
  • Preparing for more advanced coursework
  • Developing confidence and independent learning habits

Families are part of the team

Strong communication creates stronger support for students.

I value families as partners and keep them informed about progress, priorities, and next steps. I want parents and caregivers to feel confident that their student’s tutoring is purposeful and responsive to their individual needs.

My promise

Your student will never be treated like a number, a grade, or a worksheet. I see the whole student, and I build tutoring around who they are and how they learn.

What I believe

Students learn best when they feel known, supported, challenged, and confident

Known

I take time to understand the student behind the math.

Challenged

Students stretch their thinking without feeling overwhelmed.

Supported

Questions are welcome, mistakes are part of learning, and progress gets noticed.

Confident

The goal is for students to understand why an answer is right, not only to get it.
